Windows 10 May 2019 Update announced, and major update changes

Microsoft Will Finally Let You Choose When to Install Windows 10 Updates

Microsoft has insisted after the date, it will no longer provide updates that will protect user hardware. This feature will improve system performance by intelligently coordinating Windows updates and Microsoft Store updates, so they occur when users are away from their devices to minimize disruptions. This will be a feature that's separate from the "Check for Updates" tool that's used for smaller security patches.

You can find more details about the new Windows 10 update features here, though we've listed below the key features.

Feature updates were released twice a year previously; when Microsoft deemed that a system was ready for update, it would push out the update to the system automatically. For instance, in 2018, we got the Windows 10 April 2018 Update and the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Make sure to check out Microsoft's blog post for all Insider update info. Staring with the May 2019 Update, users of the Home version can pause feature and monthly updates for up to 35 days in seven-day increments up to five times. This update will be released to Windows Insiders first, who will test it for a month before it is made publicly available in May. This new "download and install" option will also be available for our most popular versions of Windows 10, versions 1803 and 1809, by late May.

Microsoft today announced that Windows Insiders on the Fast ring will soon join their Skip Ahead counterparts in testing the Windows 10 20H1 update. "By carefully studying data from this expanded population and for this additional time, we will gain increased confidence in Windows quality before offering it to a broader audience later in May", Microsoft adds. Many users leave the active hours setting at its 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. default.

Active Hours, a feature created to block automatic restarts by Windows Update may adjust the time range based on device usage patterns.

The changes make a lot of sense.

Microsoft notes that if you want to get off the train before it hits 21H1 now would be a good time to switch to the Slow or Release Preview Ring. By doing things this way, instead of having two updates per year forced onto your machine, you can install one every year and a half. It will show "near real-time information on the current [Windows 10] rollout status and known issues (open and resolved) across both feature and monthly updates", Fortin explained.
