Tiger Woods shrugs off injury scare to sit one off the lead

Masters 2019: Tiger Woods nearly gets taken down by a sliding Augusta National security guard

McIlroy got his round under way with a ideal drive and an approach to 25 feet but left his birdie putt inches short and then strangely opted to hit a three wood off the tee on the par-five second.

American Patrick Cantlay had set the clubhouse target on six under after a brilliant 64, just one shot outside the course record, while compatriot Tony Finau followed four birdies in the first six holes with a tap-in eagle on the eighth to vault into the lead.

"The last three majors, I've been right there", Woods said. "I tried to grind it out there".

Woods' round took an interesting turn on No. 14. "All of a sudden I'm here at the Masters".

Woods is tied at 6-under for the tournament with Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Justin Harding, who is the only Masters newcomer in the group.

Scott, who has never led at Augusta despite winning the green jacket in 2013, was happy with his round.

"It was fun", Woods said after the round, before saying he was confident on how he was striking the ball ahead of the weekend. "Accidents happen, and we move on".

Molinari made birdie on the par-5 15th to extend his lead over Woods and Finau to two shots.

Woods initially skipped away as the golfing world collectively held its breath, but showed no ill effects during the remainder of his round and was just an inch from a share of the lead when he left a 15-foot putt short on the final green.

Oosthuizen made seven birdies in shooting a 66.

Ian Poulter (71) and Jon Rahm (70) were a shot further back with Phil Mickelson (73) among those three off the pace on a congested leaderboard.

"It was a solid day off the tee, hit the ball well", Molinari said. "I'm in a good spot to kind of run with them".

Woods had three birdies on each nine, with a bogey 5 on the fifth his only blight.

But he feels he's getting closer.

"I'm fine. It's all good", said four-times Masters champion Woods, who has had his remarkable career interrupted by a number of back and knee surgeries.

A rain-softened course was expected to play into McIlroy's hands, but the 29-year-old added: "I don't think this course plays easier when it's soft".

Rose, Garcia and Willett, at four-over-par 148, missed by one stroke, while Schwartzel was two shots over the line. Sergio Garcia also missed the weekend.

Another former victor, Chrarl Schwartzel, did not make the cut while amateur Jovan Rebula, Ernie Els' nephew, also missed the cut.
