Thousands of people displaced and Haftar's forces continue their attack on Tripoli

The Libyan National Army forces, led by Haftar, have been seeking to reach the centre of the capital Tripoli after they have easily advanced through the desert and reached urban areas that form a more hard stage for them, amid increasing numbers of deaths and displacement and the West's fears that this will threaten its peace plan.

A spokesman for the Tripoli-based Health Ministry said fighting in the south of the capital had killed at least 25 people, including fighters and civilians, and wounded 80.

The US military is among those to withdraw its supporting forces based in the country, blaming the "complex and unpredictable" situation and "increased unrest" on the ground.

Meanwhile, fighting was underway Monday at Tripoli's former global airport, some 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of the city. As Tarek Megerisi put it in a recent article on Haftar and the civil war: "Haftar's ascension has been driven by foreign powers whose understanding of Libya is skewed and whose interests are at odds with that of the Libyan population and many states dependent on Libya's stability".

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Maria Ribeiro, said Monday the fighting had displaced more than 2,800 people, blocked rescuers from reaching casualties and damaged electricity lines. "The sound of fighting seems to be closing in", he said. However, militias supporting the United Nations -backed government in Tripoli claimed Monday they recaptured the facility.

The Libyan National Army, led by the former officer in Kaddafi's army, said that 19 of its soldiers had been killed in the past few days, with its tightened control over the internationally recognised government in Tripoli.

The media office for Haftar's army said 22 troops had been killed.

Nine of the dead were civilians, including two doctors who it said had been "providing critically needed services to civilians in Tripoli".

On Sunday, April 7, Russian Federation blocked proposals for the council to adopt a formal statement, instead insisting that all Libyan forces be urged to stop fighting, diplomats said.

United Nations envoy Ghassan Salame met Serraj in his office in Tripoli on Monday to discuss "this critical and hard juncture", the UN's Libya mission said.

A United Nations -sponsored peace conference, scheduled to start on Sunday in the southwestern town of Ghadames, was postponed by envoy Ghassan Salame, who said he was working to hold the meeting "as soon as possible".

Michelle Bachelet said all parties to the conflict must make every effort to protect civilians.

Salame later Monday condemned the attack on Mitiga, saying it was "a serious violation of global humanitarian law". "It will protect them, their properties and freedom", he said after meeting with Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit in Cairo.

A contingent of USA forces was earlier evacuated.
