Storms sweep across the South, killing 6 and injuring dozens

Strong storms, including at least one tornado, swept through parts of the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic region, damaging homes and businesses and causing injuries after storms in the South killed at least eight people.

A third child, Sebastian Omar Martinez, 13, drowned late on Saturday when he fell into a drainage ditch filled with flash floodwaters near Monroe, Louisiana, Deputy Glenn Springfield of the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office said.

In a preliminary damage report, the National Weather Service assigned the tornado an EF-3 rating, saying peak winds reached around 140 miles per hour in Franklin.

The thunderstorms bring the possibility of heavy rain, flooding, damaging winds and hail. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Near Birmingham, Alabama, a worker was killed after being struck my a vehicle while helping clear trees from a roadway.

Communities were coping Monday with structural damage and power outages and schools have been closed.

Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said a further 19 people have been injured.

Authorities in MS have identified the man who they say was killed after a tornado struck his town.

On Monday, the storm system moved east, causing travel delays in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Toppled trees are blocking streets.

Trees and power lines were knocked over and parts of buildings were left hanging across utility lines in Troy.

The next round is expected on Thursday ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service.

"Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur".

As the storm moved east, one person was killed by a tornado in the northern MS, according to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley.

In Vicksburg, Mississippi, another possible tornado touched down.

Dozens of homes in Hamilton, Mississippi, have been completely leveled.
