Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders stops in Lordstown, talks with union workers

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y. speaks to reporters at the Capitol in Washington Tuesday

'If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too'. The senator and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, a lawyer, reported an adjusted gross income of about $1.9 million in 2018, substantially more than the $142,000 Harris declared in 2004 when she was the district attorney of San Francisco.

"I and other Democratic candidates are running campaigns based on principles and ideas and not engaging in mudslinging or personal attacks on each other", Sanders wrote in the April 13 letter first obtained by The New York Times. He made just over $1 million in 2016 and $1.1 million in 2017, the years that his books hit the shelves. Kamala Harris, D-California, released 15 years of tax returns, the most of any Democratic presidential contender.

In 2016 when he ran against Hillary Clinton, he released his 2014 tax return, showing $205,617 in income, including $156,441 in wages and salary and $46,213 from Social Security benefits.

"Center for American Progress leader Neera Tanden repeatedly calls for unity while simultaneously maligning my staff and supporters and belittling progressive ideas", Sanders wrote.

Over the past five years, the couple has paid over $2.2 million in federal taxes at an average effective tax rate of about 33 percent.

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday rejected suggestions that his growing nest egg, mostly amassed from book sales following his 2016 campaign, undermines his political message. But the Vermont senator made his qualms with Fox News clear at the town hall, leading to contentious exchanges in the opening minutes between him and his moderators, Baier and Martha MacCallum.

"W$3 hile still early in the nominating process", Kimball added, "it looks like Mayor Pete is the candidate capturing voters' imagination; the numbers had him at 0 percent in mid-February, three percent in March, and now at nine percent in April".

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Illinois is one of 18 states nationwide considering legislation on Trump's tax returns, which also includes New York, Colorado and Washington.

President Donald Trump did not release any of his tax returns during the campaign and has yet to show any signs he will do so ahead of the 2020 election.

Taxes paid: $697,611, or 37%. Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand.

Up against criticism that, like Trump, Sanders was not being transparent, the senator said he was going to release them on Tax Day and urged the president to do the same.

The returns provide a more detailed look at Sanders' finances than when he ran for president in 2016.
