Convoy targeted at US base in Afghanistan: Afghan officials

The blast from an improvised explosive device occurred near Bagram Air Base, the largest US military base in Afghanistan.

The blast took place on Monday close to Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military facility in Afghanistan.

Col. Dave Butler, a military spokesman, said the man and other injured Afghans were taken to Bagram for medical treatment, where it was later discovered that he had been in the vehicle with the slain USA troops.

The Taliban has reportedly claimed responsibility for the suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack. They added that one armoured personnel carrier had been "completely destroyed".

Bagram Airfield, America´s largest air base in Afghanistan, is located about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Kabul.

The explosion took place around 5:40 pm (1310 GMT), according to Salim Noori, spokesman for police in the province of Parwan, which is home to Bagram. Abdul Shakor Qudosi, the district administrative chief in Bagram, said American soldiers opened fire immediately after their convoy was bombed.

According to Bagram district governor Abdul Shakoor Quddusi, a auto bomber attacked an armoured vehicle carrying foreign forces close to a gate to the base.

Officials did not immediately release the names of those killed, in line with standard policy pending notification of next of kin, or the nationality of the contractor.

Three US service members were also wounded in the incident near Bagram air base close to Kabul, the statement said.

Two Americans, an Army Green Beret and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist, were killed during a mission in Kunduz province last month.

The Afghan-born US special reconciliation representative is expected to enter into another round of peace negotiations with the Taliban later this month in Qatar in his bid to start an intra-Afghan dialogue to bring an end to the 18-year-old war that continues to inflict record levels of casualties on combatants and civilians.

Afghan security forces have borne the brunt of the fighting since NATO's combat mission ended in 2014.

The US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, where they primarily advise Afghan forces battling the Taliban and the local ISIS affiliate.

Almost 2,300 American soldiers have died and more than 20,400 have been wounded in the country since a US-led coalition ousted the Taliban in 2001.

Afghans, meanwhile, are on high alert for a new round of violence when the militants kick off their expected spring offensive. He said Afghans want peace, but "they don't want to live the way that the Taliban want them to live".

Sunday, chief American peace negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, concluded a almost weeklong visit to Kabul where he held extensive consultations with leaders inside and outside the Afghan government as well as civil society representatives. The insurgents dismiss the Afghan government as a US puppet.
