Mueller report's release likely 'within a week'

President Donald Trump speaks with reporters before boarding Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House Friday

US Attorney-General William Barr says he expects to release a redacted version of the long-awaited Mueller report on Russian election interference "within a week" as he defended his handling of the document. Barr said he expects to release a redacted copy of Mueller's report next week, and Democrats have repeatedly expressed concern that his version will hide wrongdoing by the president.

"This process is going along very well and my original timetable of being able to release this by mid-April stands", Barr said.

Barr said he did not believe the evidence in the report was sufficient to prove the president had obstructed justice. "And so, I think that, from my standpoint, by the - by - within a week, I will be in a position to release the report to the public".

On his program Tuesday, Limbaugh said Democrats are being "driven mad", and they can not accept that there is no Trump-Russia collusion nor a conspiracy at the Justice Department to cover it up.

The House Appropriations Committee is not among those examining Trump, his finances and his foreign contacts, and only one member of the subcommittee that questioned Barr also sits on any of those panels that are.

The committee scheduled the hearing to question Barr over the Department of Justice budget for 2020. "This report is too important to all of us".

Ever since Attorney General William Barr sent a letter to Congress last month disclosing the "principle conclusions" of the Mueller report, numerous Trump administration's critics have grown increasingly suspicious that Barr is working to protect the president from that report's findings.

The attorney general said he has not received the criminal investigation referrals from Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) that the lawmaker mentioned earlier in the week. As more information becomes available, this post will be updated. "Until someone shows me a provision" permitting the release of grand jury material, Barr added, "Congress doesn't get" that material.

Expressing frustration with the lack of information given to Congress, Lowey pointed to news reports suggesting the final report from Mueller's team is between 300 and 400 pages long. Now, the objective is to create a cloud of suspicion around Barr which, I guess, will cast doubt on the Mueller report.

The Department of Justice offered Mueller to review the March 24 letter, but the special counsel declined, according to Barr.

Barr also revealed that he himself is looking into the conduct of officials who worked the Russian Federation investigation, most of whom have either been fired or left the bureau. He said that he will colour-code the redactions and provide "explanatory notes" so people know why various sections of the report are not being disclosed. "And we want to make sure that none of the information in the report would impinge upon either the ability of the prosecutors to prosecute the cases, or the fairness to the defendants". If, for example, the grand jury material largely appears related to periphery cases not central to the president's behavior - such as, for example, testimony about Roger Stone related to additional charges similar to those that are already public - then it might not be worth the fight. The Republicans on the Intelligence Committee cited Barr's summary stating that Mueller's probe did not establish a criminal conspiracy to jointly call for Schiff's resignation as chairman last month.
