‘Incompetently Botched’: George Conway Roasts Trump for Messy DHS Secretary Departure

Kirstjen Nielsen and Donald Trump

So wrote Esquire columnist Charles P. Pierce on Monday following the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen-and as signs that senior White House adviser and xenophobe Stephen Miller is exerting more control over immigration policy. Though Trump aides were eyeing a staff shake-up at the Department of Homeland Security and had already withdrawn the nomination for another key immigration post, the development on Sunday was unexpected. Trump abandoned that policy a year ago in the face of widespread public outrage, and it was subsequently struck down in court.

News accounts say Nielsen had no intention of quitting when she arrived at the White House on Sunday to meet with Trump, but that he was determined to ask for her resignation, which she submitted shortly after the meeting.

The potential reinstatement one of the most divisive practices by Trump was just one aspect of the upheaval evident at the Department of Homeland Security this week following the resignation of Kirstjen Nielsen.

Nielsen, Meyers noted, will not leave the White House with much goodwill. Both Nielsen and Alles were closely associated with former White House chief of staff John Kelly, who resigned past year after falling out of favor with Trump.

Trump advisor and immigration hawk Stephen Miller is the catalyst behind the changes according to AP.

Given the perpetual Trump chaos, Meyers said Nielsen's resignation was not a surprise. Border Patrol agents stopped or turned back an estimated 100,000 illegal immigrants in March alone. Because his actual job is to push a set of racist ideologies and make them official White House policy.

In perhaps the most repeated political lie of 2018, which was bolstered by the mainstream media, the Trump administration was not responsible for a policy that separated migrant families at the border.

Miller is the Trump whisperer, and everything he tells the president feeds their white nationalist agenda. But her vocal defense was not enough to save her job.

Nielsen, who made Cruella de Vil look like Mother Teresa, oversaw the draconian migrant family separation policy.

"They might be awesome educators or unbelievable leaders in their own right", Stier says, "but they're not set out for success". Presumably, President Trump was relying upon the FVRA in naming McAleenan as acting secretary.

And then there's returning asylum seekers to Mexico and sometimes in their native countries.

Officials recently said it could take two years to identify potentially thousands of children and parents separated at the border.

That likely means the next DHS leader would be tasked with making administrative and regulatory changes to the asylum system, Ramon said, calling such moves a "short- to medium-term approach". But I have been at the table when Secretary Nielsen and Vice President Pence have talked about these things, and said that they think that this is the best way to protect America.

[W] ith almost 100,000 migrants apprehended by Border Patrol agents along the US-Mexico border in March, Trump is yet again ruminating angrily and obsessively over immigration, riffing in speeches about telling migrants "we're full" and "go back".

Mark Morgan, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation official who served as chief of Border Patrol under President Barack Obama, said White House officials "need to stop expecting that Congress is going to do their job" and reform immigration laws.
