House panel authorizes subpoena for Mueller report

House Democrats Take First Official Step Toward Obtaining the Mueller Report

Barr delivered to Congress a letter in late March a summary of the report that said the special counsel found no evidence that Donald Trump's presidential campaign had colluded with the Russians.

The twin challenges to Trump from a Democrat-majority Congress came even as investigators attached to the now disbanded Mueller team began leaking to the United States media that the evidence they gathered on the President's obstruction of justice was "alarming" and "significant" and a four-page summary released by the Trump-appointed attorney general of the 400-page report was sanitized. It's unclear from the reports how many members of Mueller's team, which included 19 lawyers and 40 Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, have expressed frustration with Barr.

And as Democrats have demanded the full Mueller report from Barr, Nadler and Schiff, the House Intelligence chairman, have increasingly become targets of Trump's attacks on Twitter and in public. On Wednesday, House Democrats approved subpoenas for Mueller's entire report and any exhibits and other underlying evidence that the Justice Department might withhold. Trump told reporters that the report "could not have been better" and Republican lawmakers celebrated what they perceived to be a clearing of the president's name.

Some Mueller investigators believe Barr should have included more material from their summaries in his memo to Congress, according to government officials familiar with the investigation who spoke to the Times.

"Majorities of Americans believe the full Mueller report should be made public", declared Public Citizen in a statement, referencing polls showing "overwhelming" support for the report's disclosure.

Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., of the House Judiciary Committee says she is concerned about Congress's ability to enforce subpoenas. Barr said Mueller's team found no evidence that Trump or anyone associated with his campaign conspired or coordinated with Russian Federation.

Members of the special counsel's team also complained to close associates that the evidence they compiled on whether Trump obstructed justice was "alarming and significant", the Post reported Thursday. "Why didn't he release a summary produced by Bob Mueller itself instead of trying to shape it through his own words?"

The five were key witnesses in Mueller's probe of possible obstruction of justice and were sent document requests by the Judiciary panel last month, along with dozens of other people connected to Trump.

Despite Barr's decision to work with the special counsel to review the report and determine which areas contain sensitive material that needs redactions, House Democrats are calling for the full report, sans redactions, to be turned over to Congress for review. "The Mueller report probably isn't the "total exoneration" the President claims it to be". Mueller's mission was to investigate whether the President and his people committed crimes.

Last month, before Mr. Mueller submitted his report to the attorney general, the House voted nearly unanimously to release the full report to Congress and to release all of the report to the public except those parts that are "prohibited by law".

"That job requires us to evaluate the evidence for ourselves - not the Attorney General's summary, not a substantially redacted synopsis, but the full report and the underlying evidence", the statement said.
