French Sec. of State Would Consider Asylum for Julian Assange

Assange, who had been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years, could be charged with conspiracy to hack a government computer - an allegation that dates back to 2010.

The sexual assault claim expired in 2015 and Swedish prosecutors dropped a preliminary investigation into the rape allegation in 2017, arguing that since Assange could not be reached, they could not proceed.

Assange originally sought asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where prosecutors wanted to question him over a rape allegation, which he denied.

After Assange was arrested and dragged into a police van in the British capital, American officials unsealed an indictment against him for computer hacking as part of his WikiLeaks whistleblowing activities.

The alleged victim's lawyer said she would do "everything we possibly can" to get the investigation reopened.

"We do not presume guilt, of course, but we believe due process should be followed and the complainant should see justice be done". But that support has grown cold over the past few days as Assange was arrested in Great Britain after the Ecuadorian Embassy, where he was staying, expelled him.

Some Conservative Party members are also backing the move.

Following Assange's arrest in London on an unrelated US hacking charge, Clinton said that he should be held responsible.

Assange's lawyer Jennifer Robinson said they would be fighting the extradition request. They also revealed that the U.S. military indiscriminately gunned down over a dozen people in Baghdad, including two Reuters media staff.

A legal source familiar with the case told AFP that Assange was being held at Belmarsh prison in southeast London.

The 47-year-old Australian claims the Swedish cases against him were politically motivated, linked to the leak in 2010 of a huge number of US military and diplomatic documents.

However, under British law the United States has until June 12 to submit full extradition papers.

However, relations with his Ecuadoran hosts gradually soured and pro-US President Lenin Moreno on Thursday pulled his asylum, cancelled his citizenship and permitted British police to remove Assange.

After getting the boot, Assange was taken to a London court where he was found guilty of failing to surrender.

Mr Assange now faces the possibility of extradition to the USA, where he has been indicted on a conspiracy charge in connection with his interactions with Ms Manning.

As Assange settled in to his first night in British custody, his allies and enemies alike are gearing up for what promises to be a long, dogged legal slog, not only over his possible extradition to the US but over how courts should view his actions.
