Deadly Drug Resistant Fungus Has Spread To Illinois

Bacteria with special resistance to antibiotics are increasingly found in the US increasing worries that the country will soon see a superbug that cannot be treated with known medications

"Looking back through collections, we've actually been able to isolate it back into the 1990s as it's been misidentified as other types of candida", says Rhodes, whose work these days includes helping to correctly identify candida auris so as to improve its diagnosis.

Candida auris first popped up on the CDC's worldwide radar in 2016, and it wasn't long before the first cases of infection were reported in the U.S. According to the CDC's latest figures, the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. has risen to 617, with the majority of them clustered in New York City, New Jersey and Chicago.

Although the fungus has been known to medical professionals in New Jersey for two or more years, it was not widely known to the public.

Professor Michael Baker, Professor of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington, comments: "Reports about the rise of Candida auris are worrying as this organism is frequently resistant to multiple antifungal drugs". To make things worse, this fungus is resistant to standard cleaning methods that hospitals use.

Since its discovery in 2009, C. auris has been reported in more than a dozen countries.

"This is only risky to a specific group of people - people who are already sick". For more information on this fungus Visit the CDC website. It can cause infections in the bloodstream, as well as wound and ear infections.

"C. auris infects individuals who are severely ill and/or have compromised immunity. However, once diagnosed, it's not the toughest microbe we fight against", said Apollo Hospitals infectious diseases expert Dr V Ramasubramaniam. However, it will inevitably add to the complexity and costs of managing nosocomial infections.

Last May, an elderly man was admitted to the Brooklyn branch of Mount Sinai Hospital for abdominal surgery.

Healthcare institutions here have measures in place to prevent and control healthcare-related infections, including C. auris, and are required to report any outbreaks, but no outbreak was reported, the spokesman said. It will probably not be a single catastrophic event like a pandemic, but more a series of reminders that we can not rely on antimicrobial drugs to work in the same way as they have in the past.

"Given the inevitability of increasing AMR threats, it is important to keep asking whether New Zealand is well prepared". "It is also critical that healthcare systems are optimized to prevent the spread of Candida auris".

"It is frightening to read about because, like other superbugs, it is becoming increasingly resistant to the antimicrobials that doctors use to treat it and it is easily spread". Once patients are diagnosed they have to be isolated even if they are showing no symptoms.

"This is a fairly new occurrence and we are still learning how to deal with it", he said.

"I am not aware of any reason that people in New Zealand should be overly concerned at this time".
