Dead as Storms Continue Across the Southern US

Damaging winds, isolated tornadoes possible Sunday: What you need to know

Severe storms crossing a big swath of the South, including parts of Louisiana and MS, have knocked out power to thousands and caused some flash flooding.

"It looks like a storm came up through Louisiana and into MS and exploded in Monroe County", Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.

Storms hammered east Texas on Saturday, with two children killed when a tree fell on a vehicle, authorities said.

Tornado watches are already in place across parts of the region and the potent storm system has already been producing strong tornadoes in eastern Texas.

Heavy rains and storms continued to rake the Magnolia State into the night, moving into Alabama. More than 140,000 customers remained without power in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas late Saturday. The children, ages 8 and 3, were dead at the scene, while both parents, who were in the front seat, escaped injury, he said.

Multiple injuries were also reported in the town of Franklin, Texas where a large preliminary EF-3 tornado with winds of 140 miles per hour moved through the town on Saturday.

Roy Ratliff, 95, died after a tree crashed onto his trailer in northeastern Mississippi, Monroe County Road Manager Sonny Clay said at a news conference, adding that a tornado had struck.

One thunderstorm cell near Columbus Air Force Base in MS has a potential "debris ball" signature on radar, which indicates the potential for significant tornado damage that can be detected by radar, he said.

No injuries have been reported near the campus.

At least one tornado was reported Sunday morning in southeast Alabama, near Troy and Goshen, the National Weather Service's Birmingham office said.

But tornadoes aren't the only possible cause of destruction Sunday.

According to a statement by the Angelina County Sheriff's Department, at 2:13 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to a call "about a tree that had fallen on a auto".

CNN affiliate KWTX reported widespread damage in the Robertson County town of Franklin, including uprooted trees and roofs ripped off buildings. Alto is situated about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Houston.
