U.S. warns Germany against using technology of China's Huawei

US orders Germany to dump Huawei

US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell wrote in a letter to German economic minister Peter Altmaier that such cooperation would have to be scaled back, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Germany's Ministry of Economics confirmed it had received a letter from the USA and that it would soon respond.

In the letter, Grenell warned the Germans their access to USA intelligence could be scaled back if they use Huawei equipment, which the US argues could be compromised by Chinese intelligence.

A United States embassy spokesperson told AFP on Monday it would not comment on diplomatic communications, but added that its position on 5G network security was well known.

Huawei has strenuously denied allegations its equipment could be used for espionage.

In one of the most explicit demands the United States made from its allies, Washington sent a letter to the German government to cut off ties and block all possible attempts of Huawei to enter the country's telecommunication systems or otherwise face a possibility of losing access to most of U.S. intelligence.

Ignoring the warning may result in the USA downgrading its intelligence-sharing cooperation with Germany, the letter dated last Friday said.

Reportedly, Huawei has no plans to sue the Australian government, for now.

Along with worries about network security, U.S. prosecutors have charged Huawei and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, over alleged Iran sanctions violations, and Beijing and Washington are trying to settle a tariff war affecting a wide range of goods.

Amidst the assurance of German that the risk involving Huawei can be contained, Grenell said in the letter that the Chinese government could legally compel any Chinese company to assist them in their operations without checks and balance, and therefore, the risks cannot be mitigated.

While Australia, New Zealand and Japan all issued policies a year ago to restrict the involvement of Chinese firms in building 5G networks, European countries have not followed suit.

The US has been using its clout to try and persuade other countries that it should boycott the company as it has done.
