Trump Calls New House Probe a ‘Political Hoax’

Biden tops 2020 Iowa presidential poll Sanders gains momentum

The House Judiciary Committee is launching a sweeping new probe of US President Donald Trump, his White House, his campaign and his businesses, sending document requests to 81 people linked to the president and his associates.

The chairmen of three US House committees - on intelligence, foreign affairs, and oversight - said they are seeking information about the substance of the leaders' conversations, any notes or documents related to the talks, and whether Trump or anyone acting on his behalf concealed or misrepresented the substance of the communications. Nadler made a brief but high-profile appearance in the national spotlight as one of President Bill Clinton's fiercest defenders during the 1998 impeachment proceedings.

"Investigating these threats to the rule of law in an obligation of Congress and a core function of the House Judiciary Committee", he added.

As of this writing, Mueller has charged 34 people and secured guilty pleas from six Trump associates or advisers, including Manafort, former deputy campaign manager Rick Gates, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, longtime Trump associate and informal adviser Roger Stone and former campaign aide George Papadopoulos. "It's all a hoax". The panel sent document requests to 81 people and entities, including Trump's family, campaign staff, current and former White House officials, and government agencies.

Family members, including sons Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, were also targeted.

Mr Nadler, whose committee has the power to conduct impeachment hearings, also said it was "very clear" that the president had obstructed justice.

In a book published in 2000, "The America We Deserve", Trump took his revenge, singling out Nadler as "one of the most egregious hacks in contemporary politics". "As a result, we are now expanding our investigation".

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump blasted Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, calling it a partisan probe unfairly aimed at discrediting his win in the 2016 presidential election. In a letter released by the committee chairman, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., Cipollone called the request "unprecedented and extraordinarily intrusive" and offered to provide a briefing and documents "describing the security clearance process".

Cohen testified the money was meant to partly reimburse him for $130,000 he paid shortly before the 2016 election to adult film star Stormy Daniels as hush money, to keep her quiet about an alleged affair she claims to have had with then real estate mogul Trump more than a decade ago.

Burnett asks Nadler: Why isn't Ivanka Trump on your list? Reminder: He's the Russian-born business partner with mafia ties who was involved in the plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

It's clear, after all, that prosecutors in the Southern District of NY believe he directed his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to carry out the criminal hush money payments he coordinated in violation of campaign finance law ahead of his election.

The report details the evidence Cohen has provided for Trump's involvement in the schemes.

In another all-capitals tweet, Trump said the probe was "presidential harassment!" But the overarching nature of the Trump response points to his increasing frustration with Congress, and his intention to seize on the investigations as evidence that he is under siege in Washington.
