Solskjaer laments worst Manchester United performance of his interim tenure

United had lost their last game at Arsenal and the absence of Romelu Lukaku through injury meant they lacked presence up front against the intense home side, who sought to cancel out their opponents in midfield while picking them off on the break.

However it was not enough as Wolves ran out 2-0 victors in the quarter-final.

"Hopefully some of them will have good experience with the national team, some will have a few days off and train hard here. We had a couple of balls in behind for Rashford but not enough quality". Last week [at Arsenal], we were happy with the performance but, today, we didn't have the urgency or the quality on the ball.

Solskjaer went on to admit he had ripped into his players in the dressing room as he insisted his players had to bounce back after the upcoming worldwide break.

But after being lauded for his impact since replacing Jose Mourinho in mid-December, the painful truth for Solskjaer is that this latest United performance was as poor as anything they produced under his predecessor this season.

"You can't sit and sulk too long", he said. So yes, we can go all the way but you've got to be lucky and good along the way.

And former Liverpool FC star Lawrenson is backing Manchester United to claim victory and seal their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday. "The FA Cup is the oldest competition there is".

"We've played so much worse and won games and that's the odd thing when you're a manager".

"What pleases me more is that as I walk down the steps there are people telling me they saw the 50s and the 60s and they are still coming".

"So, to give them back this joy and seeing our fans going out of the stadium with a smile - with a lot of beer, of course -feels good".

"In the second half, I think we managed the ball better".

"Because they did their part, the noise was wonderful through the game". Very well done to the boys and it was a fantastic atmosphere.
