Sanders calls for political revolution as he launches 2020 campaign

Sanders starts 2020 presidential bid

In an interview with "The View" on ABC News Friday, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said he would not meet with former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for advice, as other 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls have done.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., hugs his wife Jane after he finished speaking Saturday, March 2, 2019, in the Brooklyn borough of NY.

"My experience as a child living in a family that struggled economically, powerfully influenced my life and my values", Sanders said on Saturday. But you know what I'm doing?

"And that is something I will never forget", he said to an audience who broke out with chants of "Bernie, Bernie, Bernie".

"Three years ago they thought that we were kind of insane and extreme; not the case anymore", Sanders told a crowd of more than 12,000 people gathered at Chicago's Navy Pier.

"I know where I came from", said Sanders, who grew up on E. 26th and Kings Hwy in a rent-controlled apartment.

"It's his journey to this moment that makes me trust this man with our future", said King, who noted Sanders' father narrowly escaped the Holocaust while his two uncles an aunt and cousin didn't make it.

Bolstered by recollections from his youth, Sanders outlined the key tenets of his presidential platform, and emphasized his desire to, with the help ofhis supporters, "transform this country and finally create an economy and a government which works or all of us, not just the one percent".

Sanders talked about his membership in "a group that I think no longer exists, the Congress of Racial Equality", (it still exists) and asked the host "Ring a bell?" Sanders will return to Brooklyn, the borough where he was born, to launch a presidential campaign that's expected to connect his working-class childhood to his populist political views that have reshaped the Democratic Party.

Sanders did not often get personal during his 2016 campaign but seems poised to use his background to bolster his progressive credentials in 2020. A day earlier, Sanders campaign co-chair Nina Turner told CNN that after 2016, the Vermont senator had a new task and that it was up to him to deliver.

The 77-year-old lawmaker then acknowledged that he and Clinton "have fundamental differences".

The field of Democrats that he joins includes a number of liberal candidates who share similar sensibilities, most notably Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA. "We've gotta keep our focus on how we're going to win in 2020".

"Have we made progress in civil rights in this country since the early 1960s when I lived here?" We are going to bring our people together, the Senator added. '64) spoke about his activism and formative years at the University of Chicago, and gave an impassioned speech on issues ranging from health care to the impact of policing on communities of color. Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) have come out in support of some form of reparations in recent weeks, Sanders has been asking what form reparations would take when asked about the topic.

Sander's Saturday speech saw various reactions among social media users. He told the crowd at Navy Pier they should not "allow Trump and his friends to divide us up".
