Ryan Tannehill traded to Tennessee Titans from Miami Dolphins involving draft picks

Ryan Tannehill

Not that Tannehill is an enticing option for the future, but he is an option. The Tennessee Titans thought otherwise, however, as they have traded for the signal-caller on Friday afternoon. The original anthem protester drew much scorn from Dolphins fans and Miami media, after he wore a Fidel Castro shirt to a press conference. This season Tannehill will count $18.4 against the Miami cap, but he will not count anything against the 2020 cap.

Here's how the trade looks in its entirety.

The move makes sense for the Titans in that way. Let's hand out a grade to each team for this trade, starting with the Titans. He had a wildly uneven season past year that ended badly. He returned but was not the quarterback he many had hoped to see. And with that, his backups haven't been great. Paying big-time money for a backup quarterback has proven to be a viable approach (see: the Eagles and Nick Foles) and it makes all the sense in the world for the Titans, a team with Marcus Mariota now positioned as its starter.

Tannehill, the eighth pick of the 2012 draft, had some good moments.

Their attempt to get Teddy Bridgewater failed, which leaves them with only Luke Falk and Jake Rudock at quarterback.

Regardless of those well-laid plans, Miami was going to cut ties with Tannehill just to get his cap hit off the books and start anew at the quarterback position. The belief is Miami might be willing to eschew taking a quarterback in the first round this year in order to set itself up to take one in next year's draft.
