President Trump issues his first veto over national emergency rejection, live stream

U.S. President Donald Trump holds up his veto of the congressional resolution to end his emergency declaration to get funds to build a border wall after signing it in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington U.S

US President Donald Trump has issued the first veto of his presidency, overruling Congress to protect his emergency declaration for border wall funding.

He called the resolution "dangerous" and "reckless", defending the emergency declaration and saying, "People hate the word invasion, but that's what it is".

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives had passed the resolution to overturn the emergency last month, and 12 Republicans sided with Democratic Senators to clear the Senate in a 59-41 vote on Thursday afternoon.

The bill had passed the House in February with thirteen congressional Republicans crossing the aisle to join Democrats.

"Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution", Trump said, "and I have the duty to veto it".

Consistent with the law and the legislative process designed by our Founders, today I am vetoing this resolution.

While Democrats control the House, they would need a total of 67 votes in the Senate to override Mr Trump's veto.

Trump made the construction of a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile-long US-Mexico border a cornerstone of his 2016 presidential campaign, saying Mexico would pay for it. The fate of Trump's emergency declaration will be left up to the courts, where various legal battles are ongoing. Attorney General William Barr was also at the president's veto event.

"The President acted well within his discretion in declaring a national emergency concerning the southern border", wrote Boyd in a disclaimer issued to the press shortly after Trump played his trump card.

Trump tweeted about the political advantage he expects those who supported him will receive.

Trump said the situation on the southern border was "a tremendous national emergency", adding that "our immigration system is stretched beyond the breaking point".

Up to $3.6 billion reallocated from Department of Defense military construction projects under the President's declaration of a national emergency (Title 10 United States Code, section 2808).

He said the vote against the president was also a vote "against the America people and their safety and security".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced soon after the veto that the House would attempt to override it, after returning from a recess later this month.

The wall was a signature campaign issue for Trump, but he was never able to deliver on his promise to make Mexico pay for it, and the issue languished during his first two years in office. So, as a practical matter, the administration can continue to spend billions of dollars more on border barriers than lawmakers authorized, unless and until the courts intervene.
