Paul Manafort to be sentenced in Va. court

Paul Manafort shown leaving court in April 2018 was convicted of hiding from the IRS millions of dollars he earned from his work advising Ukrainian politicians

Manafort was found guilty on two counts of bank fraud, five counts of tax fraud and one count of failing to declare a foreign bank account.

Manafort hid millions of dollars he earned in Ukraine from the Internal Revenue Service and later inflated his income on bank loan applications. Manafort, 69, could receive as much as 24 years in prison for eight felonies, including hiding $55 million overseas, cheating the USA out of more than $6 million in taxes and defrauding banks that lent him money.

"The sentence here should reflect the seriousness of these crimes, and serve to both deter Manafort and others from engaging in such conduct", officials said.

Manafort: "The last two years have been the most hard years for my family and I", Manafort told the judge before sentencing.

Manafort's ties to Kilimnik unspooled later in a related case against him in Washington, where Manafort pleaded guilty on September 14 to two conspiracy charges and promised to cooperate with prosecutors.

Manafort was wearing a green prison uniform that says "ALEXANDRIA INMATE" in white letters on the back.

Manafort, who suffers from gout, is a first-time offender and the sentencing guidelines are "clearly disproportionate" for the crimes he committed, his attorneys said.

"The special counsel's attempt to vilify Mr. Manafort as a lifelong and irredeemable felon is beyond the pale and grossly overstates the facts before this court", Manafort's attorneys said. "My life, personally and professionally, is in shambles". Ellis dismissed efforts by Manafort's defense team to justify a lesser sentence.

At the outset of the hearing, Ellis addressed the larger special counsel investigation, saying Manafort was not convicted "for anything to do with Russian colluding in the presidential election".

There's been speculation that the president, who has expressed sympathy for Manafort, could pardon him former campaign chairman. The sentencing in that case is scheduled for Wednesday.

Prosecutors add that Manafort was not forthcoming with earlier investigators.

"Here, a court has already found Manafort lied to the government and the grand jury", Mueller said. Several others including former campaign aides Rick Gates and George Papadopoulos, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen have pleaded guilty, while longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone has pleaded not guilty.

The trial highlighted that Manafort pushed unsuccessfully for an executive at one of those banks get position in President Trump's Cabinet.

The crimes for Manafort was convicted did not directly relate to the 2016 election.

For their part, Manafort's lawyers seek mercy for a man once considered one of America's premier political consultants, advising four USA presidents and working around the world.

Following the sentencing, Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, told reporters his client's conviction and sentencing had nothing to do with allegations of Russian collusion by the Trump campaign.

Ellis repeatedly interrupted prosecutors, told them to stop using the word "oligarch" to describe people associated with Manafort because it made him seem "despicable", and objected to pictures of Manafort's luxury items they planned to show jurors.
