New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

A "manifesto" was also posted online, denouncing immigrants and calling them "invaders".

One man who said he was at the Al Noor mosque told media the gunman was white, blond and wearing a helmet and a bulletproof vest.

Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay huddled on the floor, the video showed.

One man was arrested and charged with murder, and two other armed suspects were taken into custody while police tried to determine what role they played.

At least 49 people were killed and 50 others were injured during the rampage.

It is clear that this can only be described as a terrorist attack.

"He had a big gun. he came and started shooting everyone in the mosque, everywhere", said the man, Ahmad Al-Mahmoud.

On Saturday, outside one of the two mosques, 32-year-old Ash Mohammed pushed through police barricades in hopes of finding out what happened to his father and two brothers, whose cellphones rang unanswered. Facebook said it had removed the gunman's Facebook and Instagram accounts and was working to remove any copies of the footage. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube all said they had taken steps to remove copies of the videos.

New Zealand police said at least 49 people were killed Friday at two mosques in the picturesque South Island city.

"If your child was attending the climate change protest in Cathedral Square and you want to check if they are in the Civic Offices, please call the Council Contact Centre on 03-941-8999", Christchurch City Council said.

Members of the Bangladeshi cricket team were about to enter the mosque when the terrorist opened fire.

In January 2017, six worshipers were killed and nine were injured after an attack on a mosque in Quebec, Canada.

Officials in Australia, including Prime Minister Scott Morrison, expressed solidarity.

Political and Islamic leaders across Asia and the Middle East condemned the killings and voiced concern over the targeting of Muslims.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan echoed Erdogan.

The Christchurch attackers were not on any terror watch-lists.

Journalist Chris Lynch, a radio host on New Zealand station ZB Radio, told CNN that one of the shootings had occurred at "the biggest mosque in all of Christchurch".
