'Many more would have died': Hero mosque worker grabs NZ attacker's gun

Muslims attend a vigil at the East London Mosque for the victims of the New Zealand mosque attacks

The gunman who killed numerous worshippers in a New Zealand mosque on Friday was a right-wing extremist with Australian citizenship, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

Here is what we know about the attack.

Video footage widely circulated on social media, apparently taken by a gunman and posted online live as the attack unfolded, showed him driving to one mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside. She said authorities had no reason to believe there were more suspects, but "we are not assuming that at this stage".

At least 49 people were killed when gunmen said to be whites opened indiscriminate fire at two mosques in Christchurch city on Friday in what a shocked New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said was a terror attack. Authorities made Facebook aware of the video shortly after the video began, according to Mia Garlick, Facebook's director of policy for Australia and New Zealand.

The video of this very unfortunate incident at Christchurch in New Zealand, shows a first-person view of the killings of 49 innocent people in two mosques.

"Many of those who would have been affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand", Ardern said.

Bush also said IEDs, improvised explosive devices, were found with a vehicle they stopped.

He tweeted: "Our hearts go out to the people of New Zealand following the news of this bad act in Christchurch".

The Masjid al Noor in central Christchurch was filled with worshippers when the attack happened, as was the second mosque in suburban Linwood.

"It is clear that this is one of New Zealand's darkest days". It remains unclear if more people were involved.

Survivor Syed Mazharuddin told the New Zealand Herald that he was praying with about 60 to 70 people at the Linwood mosque when he heard gunshots. "We ask all mosques nationally to shut their doors, and advise that people refrain from visiting these premises until further notice", the police wrote in Twitter.

News reports characterized the mosque shootings as the deadliest incident in New Zealand's history.

"We should not be perpetuating, sharing, giving any oxygen to this act of violence and the message that is sitting behind it", Ardern said. "But as I say, please remain in lockdown".
