Life without Facebook? Social network outage triggers moans and soul searching

Reuters was not immediately able to verify those claims and the company declined to comment beyond the statement on resumption of services. The consequences of the longest outage in the company's history, however, remain to be seen.

Telegram has become one of the popular social media platforms actively used by many people, this is evident by the stats which revealed that the platform has 200 million monthly active users. Telegram's founder and CEO Pavel Durov made this known on his personal Telegram channel on Thursday. Instagram and WhatsApp were also down throughout the day.

At the time of writing, it appears that Instagram is the only major platform owned by Facebook that has publicly declared itself to be back in operation.

Facebook acknowledged the outage previously via a tweet Wednesday, saying, "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps". Privacy though, will always be a subject of controversy as this has always been a subject of debate for many. Before blockchain schemes were a glimmer in Zuckerberg's eye, Durov was getting rich off of cryptocurrencies and past year his company raised $1.7 billion (£1.3 billion) to develop some sort of decentralised e-payments system. Parnell further added that the company is focused on fixing the problem as quickly as possible, it can confirm that the outage is not, in any way, related to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The outages lasted almost a full day, making it Facebook's longest downtime ever. We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering.

Now the question turns to whether Facebook should reimburse businesses for ads not delivered, or delivered on a semi-functional platform - as reported by Reuters, Facebook is considering whether to refund advertisers for lost exposure due to the problems, though that seems an unlikely outcome.
