Infiniti's killing off the QX30, and pulling out of Western Europe

Nissan QashqaiNISSAN

Ltd. will stop production of its upscale Infiniti models in the U.K.as part of a plan to withdraw the brand from Western Europe and focus on North America and China.

Infiniti said it will discontinue the Q30 sedan and the QX30 sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and cease their production by the middle of 2019 at Nissan's manufacturing factory in Sunderland. That reversed a decision announced two years ago after Prime Minister Theresa May's government offered some 60 million pounds in incentives.

'The commercial reality for Infiniti in Western Europe is that there is simply no visibility of a viable and sustainable business either now or in the years to come. To take advantage of the massive China market, Infiniti will introduce five new vehicles over the next five years.

Nissan launched its Infiniti line in 1989 looking to get a piece of luxury-car sales. Infiniti's sales in western Europe nearly halved a year ago to 5,800 vehicles. It sold 287 examples of the small luxury SUV in Canada previous year.

The company also announced that it is working to find alternative opportunities for employees who would be affected as it prepares to end its operation in Western Europe. These markets continue to grow for Infiniti, according to the carmaker. Customers are advised to contact their local Infiniti dealer or visit the ownership section of the Infiniti website for more information.

Currently, the brand produces the Q30 and QX30 at Nissan's Sunderland plant.

Unite said it would be seeking assurances on future employment and was confident of securing redeployment opportunities for the 200 plus workers affected.

Once this is complete, the company says it will on ending its agreements with franchised dealers, providing "the support and services necessary to ensure a smooth transition".
