Heartbroken New Zealanders mourn victims lost to Christchurch mass shooting

Australian Man Appears In Court On Murder Charge After Christchurch Attack

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year old Australian citizen and self-proclaimed white nationalist, was led by two armed guards into the court in Christchurch where a judge read one charge of murder to him. Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed.

According to a report by local New Zealand Herald daily on Saturday, Jacinda Ardern's office confirmed that Ardern was among many others who were sent a copy.

They said they were saddened by the "senseless" attacks.

Huang Yan, the manager of the Christchurch branch of China's Southern Airlines, told Xinhua the mass shooting would bring negative impact on New Zealand tourism as Christchurch has just been recovered from the aftermath of the 2011 deadly quake.

Although authorities have not released an official list of victims, a list of missing persons has been published on New Zealand's Red Cross website. One victim died in hospital. Police said the alleged shooter was arrested in a vehicle, which was carrying improvised explosive devices, 36 minutes after they were first called.

Pacific Islands Forum Chair and president of Nauru Baron Waqa expressed his "deepest condolences" to the people and government of New Zealand on what he called a sad day for Christchurch and a sad day for the region.

There were two attacks on Friday in Christchurch - one at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque next to Hagley Park, and one at the Linwood Masjid Mosque in the suburb of Linwood. He killed 41 people at Al Noor, before killing seven at another mosque nearby. "In doing so we were able to locate a further victim", Bush said.

"I still don't know where he is", she said. He was among several Fijians visiting Christchurch to see friends and relatives when he was killed at Al Noor mosque, his friend Abdul Sahid, who had flown in from Fiji to pay his respects, told Reuters.

The majority of victims were migrants or refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Somalia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

New Zealand law enforcement is working with Australian intelligence and police in the "wide-reaching" investigation, the commissioner said. He said his mother, who was at the Linwood mosque with his father and brother, saw two people shot.

New Zealand has previously tried to change its gun laws, with the most recent attempt coming two years ago.

Four New Zealand women hugged each other outside the cordon. Ardern suggested "now is the time for change" and hinted she was closely looking at rules regulating ownership of semi-automatic weapons.

Another 50 people were injured in the shootings.

Ardern added that the gunman reportedly had five firearms on him when he carried out the assault - two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.

Ardern says only a small number of bodies will be released initially, and that authorities hope to release all the bodies by Wednesday.
