Per CNN reports, Francesco "Frank" Cali was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso in the Todt Hill neighborhood of Staten Island.

Sources said the getaway vehicle was a blue pickup truck, reported NBC New York.

After all, it had been 34 years since a Mafia don like him had been "whacked" on the streets of NY.

The reputed boss of New York Mafia family the Gambinos, Francesco "Frank" Cali, has been shot dead outside his home on Staten Island, police said Thursday. A witness told the publication they heard three more shots in addition to the six that hit Cali, and described a distraught and panicked scene as the mobster's family ran outside to try to help him.

According to local media in NY, he took the helm of the Gambino family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu.

Probably the best publicly available explanation of the arrangement of New York's five families is in the 2005 book Five Families: The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires. During the late '60s and '70s, Gotti and members of the Gambino family were infamously involved in what was known as the "Pleasant Avenue Connection", referring to the flood of heroin that hit Harlem and other Black areas. The shooting outside Cali's home, the source said, suggests the killing was meant to send an ominous message.

The Gambino Family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the US, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach.

The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family was left riddled with bullets outside his home on Staten Island, an old-school hit akin to the storied executions of 20th Century mafia dons.

Castellano was the leader of the Gambino crime family when he was shot to death outside Sparks Steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan in 1985. Gotti died while in prison in 2002 of throat cancer and Gambino died in 1976.

It is believed he only had one criminal conviction, for conspiring to extort money in 2008 for which he served 16 months in prison. Paul Castellano also owned a home there.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola of the Bonanno family was shot dead while waiting in his vehicle for an order from a Bronx McDonald's.

Last week, the longtime boss of the Colombo crime family, 85-year-old Carmine "the Snake" Persico, died at a North Carolina hospital near the federal prison where he had been serving what was effectively a life sentence.
