Donald Trump's Former Campaign Manager Sentenced To Eight Years In Jail

Manafort has been jailed since last June

Judge Amy Berman Jackson sentenced Manafort to 73 months - just over six years - in prison for the conspiracy charges, but said 30 months of that would run concurrently with his previous sentence.

Manafort's sentence stemmed from his guilty plea for lobbying on behalf of a pro-Russian Ukrainian political figure without declaring the work, making it a key part of Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election. She also said Manafort's "career was spent gaming the system".

Gates reached his own cooperation agreement with prosecutors and was the government's star witness in the Virginia case a year ago.

According to the indictment, Manafort asked "Individual 6" while in New York County to sign a letter stating: 'Thank you for allowing me to use the AMEX Business Plum card to purchase season tickets for the 2016 baseball season'. Trump has not yet indicated whether he will pardon Manafort or not but has refused to rule out any final decision.

The New York Times reported that Manafort's lawyers are likely to challenge the New York indictment by arguing it constitutes double jeopardy for crimes he has already been tried for in federal court.

"No one is beyond the law in NY", said District Attorney Cyrus Vance in NY, according to a statement.

In a plea cut in September 2018, Manafort admitted to money laundering, tax fraud and illegal foreign lobbying connected to his years of lucrative work for Ukrainian politicians, as well as defrauding banks to supplement his income with cash through mortgages.

The Manhattan district attorney on Wednesday charged the former Trump campaign chairman with mortgage fraud, falsifying business records and conspiracy for a total of 16 counts, the prosecutor's office announced.

Trump has defended Manafort amid his ongoing federal trials, telling reports his former campaign manager "has nothing to do with our campaign, but I will tell you I feel a little badly about it". "No collusion", the president added.

Though the judge made clear that the case against Manafort had nothing to do with Russian election interference, she also scolded Manafort's lawyers for asserting that their client was only charged because prosecutors couldn't get him on crimes related to potential collusion with the Trump campaign. "She said this case had not addressed the collusion question". "Period", Jackson said. "Therefore, it was not resolved one way or the other in this case".

"I pledge to do all I can to accelerate the healing process", he said.

As to the political atmosphere, Jackson said she could not opine about the public perception or the broader Russian Federation imbroglio because it was not a subject of the matter at hand. He pleaded with the judge not to impose any additional time beyond the sentence he had received last week in a separate case in Virginia.

But Jackson told the 69-year-old Manafort she could not ignore his wrongdoing, telling him, "Saying I'm sorry I got caught is not an inspiring plea for leniency".

"While I can not undo the past, I will ensure that the future will be very different", he added.

He added, "T$3 he miscarriage of justice, as I've called it repeatedly, really occurred in the Eastern District of Virginia, not today in her courtroom".

Trump, who in November said he had not ruled out giving Manafort a pardon, on Wednesday said that "I have not even given it a thought". "Why would I take it off the table?"

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III in Virginia federal court sentenced Manafort to prison for 47 months for bank and tax fraud related to consulting and lobbying work he did in Ukraine. The charges against Manafort, however, were not related to his work on the Trump campaign, but rather his work on behalf of the pro-Russia political party in Ukraine.

"He engaged in crime, again and again".
