Beto O'Rourke says he's running for president in 2020

Beto O'Rourke came to wider public attention during the November midterms

Beto O'Rourke said he feels called to run in 2020, according to a Vanity Fair profile published Wednesday on the potential Democratic Party presidential contender.

Ticking off a list of crises that threaten the country, including inequality, lack of health care and the environmental problems posed by climate change, O'Rourke said it's time to make a stand.

"I think that competition is good in our party", the senator from Minnesota said, telling Harlow that former President Barack Obama has been telling 2020 candidates that he believes the more the merrier in the nomination fight. O'Rourke didn't just focus his campaigning on urban and suburban areas typically rich with Democratic voters - he traveled to all 254 Texas counties, committing to visit even the reddest, most rural places. The challenges we face are the greatest in living memory.

O'Rourke almost upset Sen. He nonetheless harnessed nationwide popularity to rake in $80-plus million during the Senate bid, including a staggering $38 million from July to September 2018 alone.

The three-term representative from El Paso released a video in the early hours of Thursday morning, where he began making the case for his leadership to the American people.

O'Rourke previous year lost that race in Texas, a bid to oust Republican Sen. This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us.

In an interview with CNN on Wednesday, O'Rourke said the 2020 campaign has "got to be about the big things that we hope to achieve and enact and do for one another".

Conservative critics are also going after O'Rourke for his website not having any information on his policies but promoting their merchandise store. "Beto runs the risk of appearing shallow, but he projects leadership, which is what the presidency is all about", he noted.

"I'm just born to do this", he told the magazine. "And, of course, he's someone that comes, like I do, from the center of the country". "That's part of the problem, and I'm a white man".

He continued: "But I totally understand people who will make a decision based on the fact that nearly every single one of our presidents has been a white man, and they want something different for this country. Especially in the fact that there are some really great candidates out there right now".

The 46-year-old announced his 2020 Democratic primary bid Thursday with an online post.
