Android Q Betas Planned By Google; Stable Release In Q3

Android 10 location access

Google has released the first developer preview of Android Q Beta this week and the major operating system update already comes with a handful of incredible features. Those with eligible devices can enroll to receive the Android Q beta here. Android Q will support native monochrome shooting in RAW format.

Starting in Android Q, apps can request a Dynamic Depth image which consists of a JPEG, XMP metadata related to depth related elements, and a depth and confidence map embedded in the same file on devices that advertise support.

This version of the operating system is therefore meant for developers to get their software running on the new platform ahead of general release.

You'll then get future beta updates and eventually the stable release automatically as they appear. Enabling dark mode in Android Q will turn the entire interface black, which would enhance the viewing experience at night. "You may also encounter issues restoring a backup".

The major barrier to testing the new version of Android is having the right phone in the first place.

Google is also helping apps take advantage of the new foldable screens, and when a user wants to share content with someone in another app, the process will be quicker and easier with Sharing Shortcuts, which let you jump directly into another app to share content. In other words, by mid-year, developers creating brand new apps or updates to existing apps will need to ensure compatibility with Android 9 Pie at a minimum, if not Android Q. Moreover, Google will start warning users when the apps on their phone target older and obsolete versions of Android.

While there are some user-facing changes with Android Q compared to Pie, this latest Android version is primarily focused on smaller backend tweaks and upgrades to make your phone, faster, safer, and more reliable. Users will also get more control on apps when it comes to accessing the location. Google has also shared the factory system images for all supported device which can be downloaded directly by accessing this URL. The goal of rolling out the beta update is to allow users to report bugs and give feedback on the new OS in its development stage so Google can rectify glitches before public release.

If history repeats itself, most of the consumer-facing features coming in Android Q should be unveiled at the Google I/O conference in May. Now, there's a third option that lets the app see your location only when it is activated. Considering HMD's close relationship with Google, it's very likely that Nokia smartphones will be a part of the beta program.

So that sums up some of the new APIs heading to Android Q. Want to give Android Q a try?

Finally, Android 10 will require 64-bit support in all apps.
