Trump to sign executive order aimed at stimulating AI

Artificial Intelligence

President Trump is expected to sign an executive order for an "American AI Initiative" today, which aims to prioritize AI development in the U.S.

The order delegates responsibility for this initiative to the National Science and Technology Council Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence.

"However, as the pace of AI innovation increases around the world, we can not sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed", it said.

Michael Kratsios, a White House science adviser, said in an essay in Wired magazine on Monday that "with proper leadership, AI can empower American workers by liberating them from mundane tasks".

An eagerly awaited national strategy on developing Artificial Intelligence was signed Monday, but lacks key details around funding and implementation.

Engage internationally: It will call for a strategy for worldwide collaboration that ensures AI is developed in a way that is consistent with American "values and interests".

The administrator's new push to boost machine learning development comes against the backdrop of an ongoing trade dispute with China, which likewise sees the technology as a major priority. This action will drive our top-notch AI research toward new technological breakthroughs and promote scientific discovery, economic competitiveness, and national security.

It also says federal agencies will establish guidance to ensure the new technologies are developed in a safe, trustworthy way.

Artificial intelligence is one of four emerging technologies (alongside advanced manufacturing, quantum computing and 5G) listed by Trump in his State of the Union speech where he called continued "investments in the cutting-edge industries of the future" a "necessity" for America to maintain its technological edge.

The American AI Initiative also asks agencies to prepare to assist workers whose jobs are impacted by artificial intelligence.

On the final principle, the order explained that the administration wants to create an worldwide environment that supports American AI endeavors and creates open markets for AI industries - fostering competitiveness while protecting technologies "from acquisition by strategic competitors and adversarial nations". No specifics are given regarding specific industries or job types, or which federal bodies will oversee retraining efforts, but the executive order specifically mentions the importance of STEM education in building future workforce with AI-relevant skills. "The United States has always been a champion of freedom, human rights, the rule of law, privacy, free and open markets, respect for intellectual property, and the opportunity to pursue the American dream".
