Trump suffers Senate defeat in Syria troops withdrawal vote

Pentagon: ISIS will regain ground in Syria when US troops leave and will play troop withdrawal as a 'victory'

"Our mission is unwavering, but we need your help to accomplish it, just as we've had over these past months and years", Pompeo said.

Both Iraq's president and prime minister have hit back at Trump's statements to USA media this week stating that U.S. troops should stay at a base in Iraq so that America can "watch Iran". "And Chairman Kim and I will meet again on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam". Many Democrats have been agitating for Congress to pass a new authorization for use of military force to specifically approve the engagements against al-Qaeda, the Islamic State and related groups, arguing that the 2001 authorization the administration is relying on is overextended and out of date.

Unlike his predecessor, Pompeo added, Trump has taken proactive measures to "take down the caliphate" and reduce the risk from ISIS and Russian Federation, the important players there, and is determined to allow the millions of displaced Syrians to return home in addition to reducing violence to help rebuild the country.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed a non-binding resolution condemning Trump's plans to withdraw troops from those two conflicts, and slapped new sanctions on the Syrian government.

"I don't think it is particularly useful in monitoring Iranian activists outside of Iraq or Syria", said David Witty, a retired colonel in the US Army Special Forces. "This is a moral issue". But remnants can be very risky. The president has hinted at plans to declare a national emergency if the wall goes unfunded.

"We are still ready to accept America's... repentance despite the fact that for years it has done injustice to us", he told foreign diplomats in Tehran during a ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution.

The new deal has not yet been ratified, but Trump said Tuesday it would boost US manufacturing jobs and automobile production, while also helping the agriculture sector and offering protections for intellectual property.

Some experts believe that means the extensive effort needed to help the Iraqi army recover from the IS fight should push the Pentagon to keep United States troops focused on a training mission instead of hunting down militants. "In Afghanistan and Iraq, almost 7,000 American heroes have given their lives", he said.

The October 2018 shooting, in which 11 people died, was the worst attack on Jews in American history.

He also said the United States had spent more than $7 trillion in the Middle East.

The commander-in-chief touted the impressive gains against ISIS, noting that their caliphate has been recaptured, their top leaders eliminated and tens of thousands of their fighters killed on the battlefield. The Afghan Taliban have so far refused to accept America's two key demands: holding direct talks with the Kabul government and announcing a ceasefire before the withdrawal of USA troops from Afghanistan.

At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Votel said the Islamic State occupies less than 20 miles of territory and has about 20,000 to 30,000 fighters, adding, "We don't fully know".

He continued: "Now, as we work with our allies to destroy the remnants of ISIS, it is time to give our fearless warriors in Syria a warm welcome home".

The Islamic State group has lost territory since Trump's surprise announcement in December that he was pulling US forces out, but military officials warn that the fighters could regroup within six months to a year after the Americans leave.

Trump also cheered his success in securing an increase in defense spending on the order of $100 billion by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Earlier on Tuesday, General Joseph Votel, head of the military's Central Command, warned that Islamic State would pose an enduring threat. Russian Federation has since also pulled out of the treaty. The US-led coalition, known as the Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) had "low confidence" in those estimates as of last July, the report said.
