Bahrain footballer held in Thailand prison for two months finally released

Bill Shorten wants to meet with the detained man's wife

"I love Australia, I will die in Australia", Araibi said after he disembarked in Melbourne airport from a Thai Airways flight. "It's wonderful to see all of the people here", Mr Al-Araibi told the crowd.

The Interpol red notice, which was issued to Thai authorities to notify them of Bahrain's expedition request, was later found to have been falsely sent; under his protected refugee status, al-Araibi was meant to be safe from being sent back to the nation from which he fled. "I love Australia", he said.

"The outpouring of support - from the Pascoe Vale Football Club, to the advocacy of Craig Foster and the Football Federation of Australia and so many others - is a testament to how deeply Mr Al-Araibi's situation touched Australians".

As a crowd of well-wishers sang You'll Never Walk Alone, Foster hugged Hakeem and added: "I think this probably the most famous young man in Australia right now!"

Al-Araibi was arrested by Thai authorities while on a honeymoon with his wife in Bangkok on November 27 previous year through an Interpol notice that was distributed against the organisation's own policies to not flag against refugees from the country they have fled.

"I want to thank all Australians for their support in achieving this outcome", Morrison tweeted.

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said she looked forward to seeing al-Araibi back in Australia.

Anesthetist Richard Harris and his dive buddy Craig Challen, a retired veterinarian, were last month named joint winners of Australian of the Year award, one of Australia's most prestigious awards.

In the Australian capital of Canberra, Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed the decision of the Thai government.

Bahrain was keen to extradite Al-Araibi to serve a decade-long jail term for allegedly vandalising a police station - a crime the refugee says he did not commit as he was playing in a televised football match when the offence occurred. He has denied those charges and says the case is politically motivated.

Prosecutors made the decision after Thailand's foreign ministry sent their department a letter Monday indicating that Bahrain had withdrawn its request for al-Araibi, said Chatchom Akapin, the director general of the attorney general office's worldwide affairs department.

Officials in Bahrain said the country "reaffirms its right to pursue all necessary legal actions" against Al-Araibi.

He was taken into custody in November after arriving in Thailand with his wife for their honeymoon.

A Bahrain government spokesman declined to give details when asked who ordered the halt of the legal proceedings.

With Al-Araibi now free, attention has quickly shifted to who is to blame for his predicament in Thailand.

Australian police have not commented on the case or their vetting of the notice, beyond confirming that they informed Thailand of Araibi's impending arrival.

"I get a lot of banter from the guys in the change rooms but not from Hakeem, maybe that'll change now", Mr Tona said.

Global law academic Lorraine Finlay, a lecturer at Perth's Murdoch University, said it was not clear what process the Australian Federal Police had followed, other than that it appeared to be highly automated.

Australian Federal Police should not have advised Thailand that someone subject to a Red Notice was traveling.

Interpol should exercise more oversight and review the circumstances of cases with a political element, he said.

It was not immediately clear what prompted Bahrain to withdraw its request.
