Seventeen people have died in a fire at a hotel in western New Delhi.
According to reports, among the dead were a woman and a child, who tried to escape the fire by jumping from a window of the hotel located in the busy shopping area of the Capital.
A call was recieved at 4.30 am from Karol Bagh's Arpit Palace Hotel and immediately 25 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, the officer at the Delhi Fire Department headquarters told IANS.
The fire at the Arpit Palace Hotel has been extinguished, but authorities are still investigating what sparked it, Deputy Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.
Footage showed flames leaping from the top floor.
Thirty-five people were rescued and those injured were taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. "There was a wooden paneling on the corridor because of which people were not able to use corridors to evacuate, therefore two people jumped off the building", Vipin Kental, a fire official said, ANI reported.

As many as 30 fire tenders were pressed to carry out the rescue operation.
Accidental fires are common across India because of poor safety standards and lax enforcement of regulations.
Authorities appeared to have been negligent in enforcing building laws in the surrounding area, Delhi's urban development minister Satyendar Jain said.
The hotel comprises a basement, a ground floor and four other floors. "Many people were still fast asleep at that time", he said, adding that during the dousing process the nine bodies were discovered.
A number of hotel guests have been killed, including a child, when they were suffocated in smoke from a severe fire that ripped through a hotel.
