Woman in Vegetative State Gives Birth in Long-Term Care Facility

Police investigating after woman in 10-year coma gives birth

The CEO of a private health care facility in Phoenix has resigned following reports that a patient gave birth despite being in a vegetative state for more than a decade.

"We don't have a systematic way to train people what's a good touch or a bad touch".

The birth has prompted a sexual abuse investigation at the nursing facility, The Mirror reports.

He refused to say whether the hospital would subject its male staff members to DNA tests to help identify a suspect. However, Spokeswoman Nancy Salmon of Hacienda Healthcare attempted to do damage control with the following statement.

Bill Timmons, Hacienda HealthCare's CEO and president, resigned yesterday after a report that the woman was sexually attacked at one of his facilities in Arizona.

"When you have a loved one committed to palliative care, when they are most vulnerable and dependent upon others, you trust their caretakers", he said.

The announcement came a day after the company's CEO resigned following reports that the woman, left in a persistent vegetative state for almost a decade after a near-drowning, had borne a child.

Karina Cesena says that her trust with Arizona's Hacienda Healthcare has "definitely been broken".

The Arizona facility is investigating what it calls a "deeply disturbing incident" that a local news outlet has said involved the sexual assault of a patient who has been in a vegetative state for more than 10 years.

A male patient also complained several staff members walked in on him while he was naked and showering with the assistance of a female member of staff in December 2017, according to records from the Department of Health and Human Services.

"From what I've been told she was moaning".

A Hacienda spokesperson said the facility was assisting with law enforcement and regulatory agencies on the "unprecedented matter" as well as reviewing its own "processes, protocols, and people".

"We will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of every single one of our patients and our employees", Orman said.

The news has been described as "deeply troubling" by a representative for Arizona Governor Doug Ducey.

"I can't think of a legitimate reason not to call it what it is", he said. For example, an investigation in 2013 found that a staff member had made "inappropriate, sexual statements" about four clients.

The staffer, along with the director of the facility, said those incidents occurred because they needed to access the trash cans or supplies stored in the shower room.

Parents of patients began coming forward, saying they had concerns about the facility's ability to keep their children safe.
