Two Huawei executives arrested in Poland over spying allegations

Poland arrests Chinese Huawei exec, Pole on spying charges

The suspects are a former officer for the country's Internal Security Agency (ABW) and a Chinese national who is a sales director for the Polish branch of Chinese telecommunications multinational Huawei, according to TVP Info.

TVP reported that Huawei's office in Poland had been searched by the AWB, along with the offices of Orange Polska where the Polish national reportedly worked.

One of Huawei Canada's top executives on Friday disclosed he was leaving his post after more than seven years with the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker, which is facing heightened scrutiny over security issues from Canada and its allies. The agency did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

One of them is Polish while the other one is Chinese.

Australia and New Zealand banned Huawei equipment from the planned 5G networks of carriers in the countries and the head of British spy agency MI6 said last month the government needs to decide whether to ban the company.

A Huawei representative said the company was looking into the matter and declined to comment further.

Previous year the company also said it had signed memorandums of understanding for 5G equipment with 45 operators in Asia, Europe and North America.

Wang's resume said he worked at China's General Consulate in Gdansk from 2006-2011 and at Huawei Enterprise Poland since 2011, where he was first director of public affairs and since 2017 the "sales director of public sector". They'll both remain in custody for at least three months.

According to a draft of China's national intelligence law that was recently released, all Chinese companies "shall support, cooperate with and collaborate in national intelligence work, and maintain the secrecy of national intelligence work they are aware of". However, the person is said to be a former high-ranking official at Poland's internal security agency.

The arrest might not have a big impact on broader trade tensions between China and the USA, but it shows that "there will always be competition and acrimony related to Chinese tech companies", Benner said.

"As we start 2019, it is time for a change", Bradley said in the post.

Last month, Huawei's CFO Wang Mei Zhou was arrested in Vancouver Canada for allegedly allowing Huawei to violate a United States sanction against Iran.

However, Polish authorities told Reuters the spying allegations are related to the actions of the individual Huawei employee, and not necessarily linked directly to the company itself.

Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the company founder, as she transited through the country.

This refusal to use Huawei's products come from the belief that doing so would pose "significant risks to national security" and potentially provide sensitive information back to Beijing through "backdoors" installed in Huawei products.
