Senator backs temporary re-opening of U.S. govt

President Donald Trump told a White House meeting with state and local officials he was not about to declare a national emergency to fund his controversial border wall project

Democratic lawmakers don't want to include Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)-the protections for illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children-in negotiations with the White House on ending the partial government shutdown, President Donald Trump said in a Twitter post dated January 13.

- House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy of California to CBS' "Face the Nation" on the $5.7 billion Trump wants for the U.S. -Mexico border wall.

Trump said on Fox News on Saturday night that he has an "absolute right to call a national emergency" over border security.

Trump fired off a series of tweets pushing back against the notion that he doesn't have a strategy to end what became the longest government shutdown in US history when it entered its 22nd day Saturday.

Last Friday, the partial shutdown was the first time Federal employees did not receive a paycheck, as reported.

The South Carolina Republican said Democrats thus far have not been willing to budge.

But Lindsey Graham admitted Mr Trump still wants to reach a deal for the wall before agreeing to reopen closed government departments. "That's why I'm depressed". But Trump said Friday that he wasn't rushing to use that option, which would be challenged in court and, if not overturned, establish a precedent expanding the power of future Democratic presidents.

Asked why he had not yet declared a national emergency, Mr Trump said he was giving Congress a chance to "act responsibly".

And Trump's stated reason for shutting down the government, securing funds for a border wall, also polled poorly.

"They can name it 'peaches.' I don't care what they name it. We believe the government should be opened".

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci told the West Block's Mercedes Stephenson that the three-week shutdown is a grudge match symbolizing the bigger ideological fight between Republicans and Democrats, but warned the country will face serious economic harm if it doesn't end soon. While they will be paid once the shutdown ends, many say they will struggle to pay bills in the meantime. Part of that promise was a Wall at the Southern Border.

The shutdown on Saturday became the longest United States government closure of the modern era, exceeding the 1995-96 funding lapse.

He was one of 19 law enforcers, faith leaders and elected officials invited to a White House meeting Friday to discuss border security with President Donald Trump, who took the opportunity to attack Democratic refusal to fund a wall.

The airport said it would reopen the concourse on Monday and "continue to monitor checkpoint staffing levels and make adjustments as necessary".

But the Post poll also found a hardening of Republican support for a wall, with 70 per cent now saying they strongly support the wall, up from 58 per cent a year earlier.

Johnson also suggested that Congress pass legislation to pay federal employees who are now working without pay.

"The easiest solution to the shutdown is to just give President Trump the money for the mandate he received from the American public", he said.

Nearly half of all Republicans (49 percent) say the situation at the border is a crisis, and 43 percent say it is serious but not a crisis. "I'd rather have the Supreme Court rule and then work with the Democrats on DACA".
