Patrick McCaw's signing Cleveland Cavaliers reviewed National Basketball Association

Patrick McCaw Cavs

If Cleveland is to be guilty of going against the Collective Bargaining Agreement, they could face punishments if the National Basketball Association finds any wrongdoing.

The Warriors held McCaw's rights as a restricted free agent, then elected not to match the two-year, $6 million offer sheet he signed December 28 with the Cavaliers - with the potential luxury-tax ramifications among the many factors in their thinking.

Free-agent guard Patrick McCaw plans to sign a deal with the Raptors after being released by the Cavaliers earlier this week, according to ESPN.

The rocky relationship between McCaw and the Warriors started almost seven months ago when McCaw rejected the Warriors' $1.7 million qualifying offer and two-year $5.2 million deal, Mercury News reported. Matching the McCaw offer sheet would've elevated the Warriors luxury tax bill $11.3 million to $61.6 million.

McCaw had five points and three rebounds in 53 minutes across three games for the Cavs, his only appearances this season. That was the day before his offer sheet became guaranteed for the rest of the season, which has raised a few eyebrows around the league.

Even if Cleveland did intend to help McCaw circumvent the restricted free agency process, the league would need to find explicit evidence proving intent.

The Warriors sought the help of the National Basketball Association to look into the trade involving the Cavaliers.

The NBA is investigating the Cavs for possibility circumventing the salary cap after waiving McCaw. McCaw is set to clear waivers Wednesday and become an unrestricted free agent. Fines could range anywhere between $3 to $6 million as well as the loss of future first-round draft picks.

The Raptors announced Thursday that the club had signed McCaw, although terms of the deal were not disclosed.
