Kuchar overcomes slow start to win Sony Open

Bryson De Chambeau surged into a share of fifth after a super 63

US veteran Matt Kuchar shook off a slow start and pulled away for a four-shot victory over Andrew Putnam Sunday in the US PGA Tour Sony Open in Hawaii. With no bogeys on his card, it even felt easy to him. "That was fun. I felt like I was trying to win a golf tournament just to make the cut, which is not really something I want to get used to, but early in the season when I started the day 17 shots back, it was something where I could actually feel some pressure and make adjustments, too".

"To shoot 7 under back-to-back is unexpected, but awfully excited", Kuchar said with the same smile he wears for most any occasion.

"Apparently, I need to go buy a lottery ticket today", Reavie said.

Putnam was two shots behind after a 67.

Putnam, who played college golf at Pepperdine and claimed his first PGA Tour victory previous year in the Barracuda Championship, capped his 67 with an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole.

"Andrew was tough", Kuchar said.

Putnam made his only mistake with a 9-iron into a deep bunker left of the 14th green, leading to bogey. It was only the second time in his career Kuchar has won twice in the same season. But he had a good session with his swing coach in Dallas, and it paid off two weeks later on the Gulf side of the Mexican coast.

Putnam, who won for the first time a year ago in the Barracuda Championship held opposite a World Golf Championship, did his best to stay in reach.

Also tied for fifth were Charles Howell III and 54-year-old Davis Love III, who had one of his better putting rounds. "I look forward to the rest of the year to try and continue to see how great this year can be".

The next challenge is winning, and it helps to have gone through the experience last November.

Kuchar, 40, held a two-shot lead entering the final round at Waialae Country Club, but saw that evaporate with three birdies over his first five holes against a lone birdie. "For me, I've never had a cushion like this coming down to the last (hole)".

The Australian shot a two-under 68 third round to get to 11-under at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu on Saturday.

Kuchar's final-round 66 put him at 22-under 258 for the tournament, with Putnam finishing at 18 under with a 2-under 68 on Sunday.

It was a hard day for 11-time PGA Tour champion Spieth, who had four bogeys and just one birdie to be tied for 127th and 12 shots off the pace. Love is not playing next week on the Big Island because he is playing the Singapore Open.
