Gutfeld: Trump Should Acknowledge Dems' 'Personal Vendetta' Against Him in Nat'l Address

US President Donald Trump

Bush told Politico that the 43rd president never talked to Mr. Trump about a border wall.

Eric Shultz, a spokesman for former president Barack Obama, pointed The Post to past remarks in which Obama spoke critically about the wall.

The White House announced news of the border trip as the partial government shutdown continues into its 17th day, with no end in sight.

The moves indicate the Republican president has no intention of backing off his pledge to build a wall that he believes will stem illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

The President's decision to deliver a prime-time address and visit the southern border came after some of his allies warned him his arguments about immigration aren't resonating, according to two people familiar with the matter.

More should be revealed about Trump's eventual endgame for the shutdown tomorrow.

"All I know is it's something they've (the White House counsel's office) looked at, they've examined", Pence said.

The White House did not say whether he planned to make such a declaration, which would nearly certainly face a legal challenge, on Tuesday night. But afterward some aides viewed the event as a dud that didn't have the breakthrough effect that was desired. The idea has been championed by acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, and was a topic of discussion at Sunday's senior staff retreat at Camp David.

Democrats returned to Washington in the new year, taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives, and passed legislation to reopen all closed government agencies but did not include wall funding.

As the shutdown continues, more Americans are beginning to see its effects.

The funding stalemate has shut down a fourth of the federal government, impacting 800,000 employees, either furloughed or working without pay. Conditions at national parks are deteriorating and the Department of Housing and Urban Development is running out of money for a key housing program. Democrats have refused to support the spending and Trump has refused to sign legislation reopening the government without it.

President Trump's bogus claim that former presidents have endorsed his idea for a wall along the southern United States border highlights the more than 7,600 false or misleading statements he has made since he stepped into the Oval Office, a report said Monday. And it repeats some existing funding requests for detention beds and security officers, which have already been panned by Congress and would likely find resistance among House Democrats. Democrats say there has been no evidence of suspected terrorists coming through the southern border and that Trump has no grounds to declare a national emergency over the issue.

The trio repeatedly used the word "crisis" to describe the state of the US-Mexico border as they made the administration's case for $5.7 billion in border security funding.
