Freddie Kitchens has 'good chance' of being next Browns coach

Report Browns give 2nd head coach interview to Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski

Kitchens will take over as Cleveland's head coach for the upcoming season.

The Browns had gone 1-31 in the previous two seasons under Jackson. It appears he did enough to impress the front-office tandem of John Dorsey and Paul DePodesta and will come away with the job.

The 44-year-old Kitchens, who had a dazzling eight-week run as the team's interim offensive coordinator, is finalizing a contract to become Cleveland's ninth coach since the franchise's 1999 rebirth, a person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Wednesday. He had suffered an aortic dissection caused by an aneurysm in his heart, and had he not been on the practice field when it happened where the team's medical staff could get him the help he needed in time, he might have bled to death. He replaced fired offensive coordinator Todd Haley. They're going to make the right call.

Kitchens has emerged as a favorite along with Stefanski, who according to several reports is returning to the Browns' facility in Berea, Ohio, for a second interview. Austin since has been the defensive coordinator for the University of Florida Gators for one season under Urban Meyer, the Detriot Lions for three years from 2014-2017 under Jim Caldwell, and the Cincinnati Bengals for less than a year this season before being relieved from his duties by Marvin Lewis. He threw 19 of his 27 touchdown passes - a league rookie record - in the final eight games and Mayfield completed 68 percent of his passes.

There is also no good guess at who could serve as special teams coordinator under Kitchens either. Cleveland has been a desert for stability at the head coach and quarterback positions over the last two decades, but with one draft pick in 2018 and one coaching hire in 2019, that all may change.

An official announcement from the Browns announcing Kitchens is expected later this afternoon.
