Djokovic downs SA's Anderson in Abu Dhabi final

Nadal to skip 3rd-place match at Mubadala

Novak Djokovic won 2-1 and claimed the title of the event.Novak Djokovic of Serbia celebrates during his match against Kevin Anderson of South Africa at the 2018 Mubadala World Tennis Championship final in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on December 29, 2018.

World number 1 Novak Djokovic has won the Mubadala World Tennis Championship after defeating Kevin Anderson 2 sets to 1.

Nadal will play as many as four matches in Brisbane if he deems it good for his readiness for the Australian Open, from which he withdrew during his semi-final last summer due to injury.

Djokovic extended his dominance over Anderson, whose only victory in 10 matches against the Serb came a decade ago in Miami.

After receiving his Championship trophy, Djokovic said: 'I'm really happy to have a match like this.

Motivated to overpower a great rival and defend the title, Anderson fought great in the final set, rattling off one good hold after another and creating a break point at 1-1 that could have been crucial. "We had some nice and exciting rallies with powerful shots", said Khachanov, who will start the 2019 ATP-Tour in Doha next week. And this is what you want to see in sport - young players showing their courage and stepping up.

'I take a lot of positives from this match, Anderson is one of the best players in the world and has been playing with a high level of consistency.

In the super tiebreak, Khachanov raced away to a 5-1 lead aided by a couple of unforced errors from Thiem and didn't face much resistance as he wrapped up the match in 10-3 in an hour and 24 minutes.

He said he still had some pain, but "I'm in a better place than I was a few months ago".

"They are different opponents and different styles of play and to play real matches with them here has been great for me".

Having arrived for the Brisbane International ahead of the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal is ready to put his injury woes behind him.

"It was a little bit of risk that we don't make it into the beginning of the season, but here we are, practising more or less hard and we are excited to start the new season", he said.
