Bohemian Rhapsody wins best drama Globe — Golden Globes

Bohemian Rhapsody was so-so movie

"Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime", said Malek to a room filled with applause.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" won and Rami Malek won the best dramatic award for his turn as the music group Queen's front man Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody". "This is for and because of you, gorgeous".

It is followed by Bradley Cooper's critically-acclaimed romance drama A Star Is Born, The Favourite and Green Book, which all received five nominations each. "He lifted me up to be everything I could be in this film", the 37-year-old said.

Taking home the coveted prize is Bohemian Rhapsody, a unique win considering it's a musical that wasn't a contender in the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category.

In another upset, Glenn Close won best actress in a drama for her role as a long-suffering spouse in "The Wife".

Speaking with ET, said: "We'll have to see about that - it would be nice to play a villain, that would be another dream role for me". I tried to take everything he was struggling with, his complication, his chaos, his turmoil and this beauty inside of him.

One of the first questions posed to the filmmakers and Malek backstage was whether Singer's departure had been a big hurdle for the film. It came as a big surprise for the movie buffs when the two films won big at the awards.

Shape-shifting actor Christian Bale, who famously gained 40 pounds to play former Vice President Dick Cheney, won best actor in a comedy for "Vice".

British actress Olivia Coleman was a victor for bawdy historical romp "The Favourite".

The boozy gala at the Beverly Hilton also recognised Alfonso Cuaron's Roma, a cinematic ode to his childhood in 1970s Mexico City, with best director and foreign film honours, while seven movies bagged one statuette each.

Malek also thanked the band: "To Queen".
