Trump to nominate State Department’s Heather Nauert as United Nations ambassador

Trump reportedly picks Heather Nauert to be UN ambassador

A former news reporter for ABC, she joined Fox in 1996, originally as a correspondent and later as a co-host for Fox and Friends.

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert is expected to be President Donald Trump's nominee for the United States ambassador to the United Nations, according to media reports.

If she wins Senate confirmation, Nauert will face a broad agenda at the United Nations topped by the need to maintain worldwide sanctions on North Korea.

Nauert would replace Nikki Haley, who has held the post since the beginning of Trump's administration.

The State Department declined to comment and Nauert did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Numerous reports in the U.S. media - the first of which appeared in Bloomberg news - said Nauert would be nominated Friday, citing sources close to the matter. A Republican congressional aide said the president was expected to announce his decision by tweet on Friday morning.

Mr Trump will make the announcement in the coming hours that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert will take up the plum role, Bloomberg reported, citing three sources.

Haley similarly had little foreign policy experience when appointed, although she had a national name as the governor of SC. She will have to be confirmed by the Senate to become ambassador to the United Nations.

"If Nauert is nominated and approved, people will be interested to see whether she's willing and able to do the diplomatic toil or whether she will see this as an extension of the spokesman position and focus more on presentation of U.S. position before the Security Council", said Gowan. If Nauert is confirmed for the job, it would cap a precipitous rise in diplomacy in less than two years. More details will be added as they become available.

Nauert's appointment would realign power dynamics within the President's national security team, as the ambassadorship would likely be downgraded from the Cabinet level post Haley had insisted on.

The president is weighing a number of other end-of-year staff changes, including replacing Chief of Staff John Kelly, two of Trump's advisers said on Thursday.

"To be blunt, it's seen as a win simply that it's not Grenell", who is known to share Bolton's "pugilistic approach" to global institution, Gowan said. "Nauert is a cipher as far as most United Nations diplomats are concerned".

Mr Trump earlier said his daughter, Ivanka, would be flawless for the role but conceded he'd be accused of nepotism if he appointed her.
