Suspected Cyberattack From Outside US Hits LA Times, Other Papers

Computer virus hampers San Diego Union-Tribune's Saturday delivery

A source close to the situation reportedly believed "the cyberattack originated from outside the United States", in an effort to "disable infrastructure".

The Times said the issue was first detected Friday.

A source told the Times the source of the attack was a "foreign entity".

Newspapers affected included the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun and the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, both of which are no longer owned by Tribune Publishing but still shares some systems.

The computer virus caused problems for newspapers connected to Tribune Publishing, the company confirmed this weekend, compromising software crucial to the news production and printing process.

Kollias said there is no evidence customers' personally identifiable information or credit card had been impacted, nor was the information of subscribers, advertisers and online users. Technology teams made significant progress in fixing it, but were unable to clear all systems before press time.

The Sun Sentinel's Saturday edition was delivered Sunday because of the delays.

All papers within The Times' former parent company, Tribune Publishing, experienced glitches with the production of papers.

It also stymied distribution of the West Coast editions of The Wall Street Journal and New York Times, which are all printed at the Los Angeles Times' Olympic printing plant in downtown Los Angeles.

Tribune Publishing spokeswoman Marisa Kollias said the virus hurt back-office systems used to publish and produce "newspapers across our properties". The paper's Saturday deliveries were affected by an interference with Tribune Publishing's print production systems. "We are working diligently to resolve this matter".

Light said the digital replica of the paper was also affected.

A computer virus prevented most of the San Diego Union-Tribune's readership from waking up with a paper Saturday morning.

10News received multiple calls from viewers who did not receive the Saturday edition of the paper.

"The malware unfortunately impacted our timeliness and delivery of Saturday's Chicago Sun-Times", Kollias said.

The company also said it is "making progress" to resolve publishing issues, and has reported the attack to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A Tribune Publishing spokesperson didn't confirm the ransomware infection, but did say the incident was caused by "malware".
