Senators Introduce Bipartisan Resolution to Saudi Murder of Khashoggi

Khashoggi

President Trump and members of his administration have dismissed the CIA's conclusion that the crown prince was behind Khashoggi's killing and have rejected taking action against the country.

The office of Istanbul's prosecutor on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for two Saudi officials for their alleged links to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom's consulate in Turkey.

Some of Trump's fellow Republicans have joined Democrats in blaming Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet yesterday called for an global investigation.

The spy agency has evidence he exchanged messages with Saud al-Qahtani, who allegedly oversaw the Saudi reporter's murder.

"The worldwide community seems to doubt Saudi Arabia's commitment to prosecute this heinous crime".

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has no "compelling case" to cut ties with Saudi Arabia following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but it's unlikely to pursue an expansion of its work in the kingdom, according to a report released by the school Thursday.

"It's not in our interests to give the crown prince. a pass for murder of an American resident with three American children", Graham said.

"If we don't stop it now, it gets worse later", Graham said, adding that MBS has been a "wrecking ball" the Middle East.

Lindsey Graham of SC, the administration sent in CIA Director Gina Haspel to brief a select group of senators from key committees on the agency's findings about the Khashoggi killing.

USA lawmakers on Tuesday heard the CIA's assessment about Saudi crown prince Mohammad bin Salman's role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi first hand from the agency's director, who confirmed and affirmed what they have long suspected.

Saudi Arabia has detained 21 people and says it is seeking the death penalty for five of them.

"She didn't tell them anything that (Mattis and Pompeo didn't say)", the Texas Republican said, "so any senator who wants the information has had access to it". If he were in front of a jury, "he would have a unanimous verdict in about 30 minutes".

The measure also cites the initial insistence from Saudi officials that Khashoggi had left the consulate unharmed - statements that proved to be false.

"There is not a smoking gun, there's a smoking saw", Graham said.

The Senate resolution also states that MBS "must be held accountable for contributing to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen" and "preventing a resolution to the blockade of Qatar" as well as "the jailing and torture of dissidents and activists inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" and "the use of force to intimidate rivals".

"It'll have teeth", said Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, who added that the senators are trying to piece together various proposals into one plan to achieve bipartisan consensus.

"There are lots of Republicans who are going to try to water this down, but they'll have to find 50 votes, and I'm not sure that they have 50 votes for a substitute".
