Second Guatemalan child dies in DHS custody after illegal border journey

The department said Wednesday some children detained in more remote areas were re-screened by emergency medical technicians or Border Patrol agents. Doctors noted the boy had a 103-degree fever and diagnosed him with a common cold before releasing him back to border patrol custody. "We're doing dozens of hospital trips every single day with children that have fevers or manifest other medical conditions".

He was discharged in the mid-afternoon with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen.

The agency said its officers repeatedly conducted welfare checks on Felipe and his father, and that agents chose to take the boy back to the hospital at about 10 p.m. because the boy "appeared lethargic and nauseous again".

National Nurses United condemned the Trump administration for the deaths of two young children in U.S. Border Patrol custody.

It is not yet clear what caused Felipe's death in the final moments of Christmas Eve.

Alonzo died early Tuesday after being hospitalized and released with a temperature earlier in the day. She said that Gomez was deep in debt and took out a loan to travel to America.

USA agents say she likely had little to eat and drink before arriving at the US border, however, her father said that was not true. He died just before midnight.

González Morales said the US needs to stop detaining children, either entering the country with their families or unaccompanied, because "as repeatedly stated by a series of United Nations human rights bodies, detention of children based on their migratory status is a violation of global law".

The father of the 8-year-old migrant who died on December 25 took the boy with him on the risky trek from Guatemala to the United States because he heard a rumor that it would help him enter the country.

It had been more than a decade since a child died in CBP custody, she added.

In its extended statement Tuesday about Felipe Gómez Alonzo, the agency said the boy and his father received welfare checks at each of the stations where they were held.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has yet to give an official cause of death for the boy, prompting Democratic lawmakers to intensify calls for an investigation.

An 8-year-old boy has died in the hospital after he and his father illegally crossed the border into the United States, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials said in a statement.

In the past three weeks, two Guatemalan children have died after they were detained with their fathers after crossing the border. Before this month, there were six deaths in CBP custody in 2018, and none of those were children, DHS officials said.

They'd been held twice the amount of time the agency's detention standards recommend.

Gomez's parents, who speak a Maya language called Chuj and little Spanish, have requested an autopsy be done as quickly as possible so their son's body can be repatriated to Guatemala, Larra said.
