Repeated drone sightings halt flights at Gatwick Airport

London's Gatwick Airport completely shut after drone sightings

Gatwick has warned that disruptions could continue into Thursday.

All inbound and outbound flights at London's Gatwick airport have been suspended after drones were seen in its airspace, airport authorities have confirmed.

There were multiple reports of drone sightings since the initial report of two drones at 9.03pm local time on Wednesday (Thursday 5.03am, Singapore time), Gatwick said in an earlier statement.

"We will update when we have suitable reassurances that it is appropriate to re-open the runway".

While most nations prohibit drones from flying in pathways reserved for airliners, the millions of small consumer devices that have been purchased around the world can't be tracked on radar, making it hard for the authorities to enforce the rules.

Two drones were reportedly spotted hovering near a runway, prompting the airport to stop all flights while it investigated the sightings.

'We apologise to any affected passengers for this inconvenience but the safety is our foremost priority'.

He blasted the "irresponsible" act, telling BBC Radio 4's Today programme that 10,000 people had been affected by the closure, including 2,000 whose flights had been unable to take off.

"If there is anybody at Luton airport that has been diverted from Gatwick airport and needs a lift home, let me know", he wrote on Twitter.

Flights in and out of the airport were suspended at about 9pm last night after two drones were sighted near the airfield.

Gatwick added that airlines had been working to provide delayed and diverted passenger with hotel accommodation or transport. "Which has made the delay better".
