Politics won't be a factor in Huawei 5G decision: Trudeau

Third Canadian detained in China - report

Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, urged caution on Wednesday and said he would not be "stomping on a table" after China detained the third Canadian.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry, on the other hand, stated on Wednesday that it was not aware of any new Canadians detained in China.

The detentions of the Canadians followed the arrest on December 1 in Vancouver of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies.

Meng was detained at the request of the US, which accuses Huawei of using a Hong Kong shell company to sell equipment to Iran in violation of USA sanctions.

Meng was released on bail last week pending a USA extradition hearing on United States fraud charges related to sanctions-breaking business dealings with Iran.

A spokesperson for Canada's foreign ministry confirmed the detention, but declined to offer further details other than that they are providing assistance to the family, The Globe and Mail reported.

"How we move in a thoughtful way that both protects that both protects Canadians and allows us to participate in the innovations that are moving towards the future is an extremely important decision that we will make and take with all responsibility and thoughtfulness", Trudeau said. Kevin and Julia Garratt were detained in China at the time and held for more than two years in the case of former. The National Post said it was told by sources who had spoke to the family of the detainee that he or she is not a diplomat or an entrepreneur based in China.

BCE and Telus, two of the country's major cell phone carriers who already use Huawei's equipment in their infrastructure, are now in 5G pretrial stages with the Chinese company, which according to some intelligence officials, could pose a security threat due to its links with China's government. If it was indeed a response to Canada's cooperation with USA law enforcement agencies, then it also was not a successful deterrence for further actions, as evidenced by Meng's arrest.

The other man, Michael Spavor, is a businessman who arranges tours of North Korea.

Bob Rae, Canada's special envoy to Myanmar and a former Liberal Party leader, tweeted yesterday that "there are no coincidences" and said the detentions look "too much like hostage taking".

Canadian officials have been granted consular access to both Kovrig and Spavor.

The Canadian Government has not identified the third Canadian, though Canadian media has said the person is Ms McIver, an English teacher who is being held because of "visa complications".

The prime minister wouldn't say at what point his government would issue a warning against Canadians travelling to China, instead saying Global Affairs Canada will continue its "ongoing reflections" on doing so.
