O2 services restored after millions hit by data outage

Data not working on O2 network this morning

Engineers are working to fix the issue that has meant customers can not use their mobile data to access the internet and other services on its network.

She added: "Ericsson sincerely apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused".

"While it's positive that voice calls are still up and running, without a projected timeframe for a fix, this is likely a worrying situation for a large proportion of O2's some 32 million United Kingdom customers".

The service was still down for many users at the time of writing and O2 said that it was working to fix the issue "as quickly as possible".

British customers reported not being able to use mobile data to access the internet and the operator's network on Thursday after disruption began at about 5am.

SoftBank said the outages stemmed from problems at exchanges for its high-speed wireless LTE network, while O2 blamed an issue in a third-party supplier's system that was impacting services globally.

"At 1.39pm on Thursday, December 6, 2018, the SoftBank Network Center detected software's malfunction in all of the packet switching machines manufactured by Ericsson, which are installed at the Tokyo Center and the Osaka Center, covering our mobile customers nationwide", SoftBank said.

Tesco Mobile and Sky Mobile customers are also said to be experiencing issues, with more than 30 million people affected in total.

"We will continue to work with Ericsson through the night, who have assured us that a full service will be restored for customers by the morning".

The O2 mobile network has suffered a major outage this morning, with the company's data network going down globally, although O2 subscribers could still make calls.

"We're aware that our customers are unable to use data this morning", O2 has said in a statement.

"We'd encourage you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can and we are really sorry".
