New York City sky lights up bright blue after Queens power plant explosion

A transformer explosion at the Consolidated Edison energy company has lit up the skies over NY city, shocking witnesses and prompting wild theories ranging from an alien invasion to a Russian cyber-attack on the power grid.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a message on Twitter that Con Edison was evaluating the extent of power outages in the area.

Parts of Queens have lost power and La Guardia airport has closed after the incident.

Deputy Inspector Benjamin Gurley of NYPD's 43rd Precinct quickly assured residents that there were no aliens involved in the incident, and the Fire Department of NY said in a tweet that the situation was under control.

The freaky sight set social media a frenzy, as authorities tried to work out what was going on at 9.30pm on Thursday night. There are no other significant reported power outages at this time.

Around 11 p.m., the airport tweeted power was restored in the temrinals with outgoing and incoming flights resuming.

Locals first noticed flickering lights, before turning their gaze outside to see a bright teal light pulsating for minutes.

An electrical fault at the 138,000-volt Astoria east substation caused a flash, emitting a halo of light from the facility at 20th Avenue and 32nd Street. Looks like departing passengers are being held back until security check points are back up and running'. He said the MTA had power, but there were delays on the 7 train and that power was "coming back on" at LaGuardia, but travellers should expect delays.

Authorities are investigating an apparent power plant explosion.

"Electricity went out, then the explosion, my building humming and shaking, sky was lit up blue, green, and white", one resident said on Twitter.
