More than 276,000 still without power after massive winter storm slams Southeast

North Carolina governor urges residents to get prepare for storm

More than 1,000 Sunday flights into and out of North Carolina's Charlotte Douglas International Airport have been canceled, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Parts of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia also saw outages.

Like its neighboring states to the south, Virginia also suffered thousands of power outages and dozens of vehicle crashes.

North Carolina authorities declared a statewide emergency.

The National Weather Service has expanded Winter Weather Advisories into the valley to include Knox, Anderson and Union Counties. "Don't be fooled, this storm is treacherous".

Forecasters predict that North Carolina could receive up to 12 inches of snow in the more mountainous areas of the state, and coastal areas of the southeast could see flooding.

Power outages are likely and air travel will be restricted.

Twenty inches of snow fell in some areas of western North Carolina Sunday, but Mecklenburg County got only 1 to 4 inches of snow and ice. One driver said that some places was about a foot deep and that his tractor was not strong enough to push the snow.

Meanwhile, police in Virginia say there have been significant delays on interstates as vehicles stuck in snow have impeded travel. Ray Cooper said Monday.

About 144,000 North Carolina households are still without power Monday morning, the governor said. At least two deaths were reported in North Carolina.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is strongly urging residents to stay off the road as a massive winter storm blankets parts of the Southeast with snow and ice. The Highway Patrol already had responded to more than 670 collisions and almost 1,600 calls for services since the storm began. If you can't stay home, stay alert.

While the core of the storm will more offshore into Monday, officials caution that the impacts may linger for days as crews work to clean up in its wake.

The airport is the second-largest hub of American Airlines, which has "reduced its operations" because of the weather, the airport said. The National Weather Service said early Monday rain and near-freezing temperatures for the Myrtle Beach area could result in some wintry weather.

Crews in SC have dumped 156,000 gallons of brine on roads in the western part of the state to keep ice from building up as long as possible.

Officials warned residents to prepare emergency kits and stay off roads in impacted areas.
